Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fairview, North Carolina. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in this area is unparalleled. We boast centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed, allowing us to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

Of late, drug testing methodologies have increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over conventional urine tests. This test appeals to those enforcing strict no-drug policies due to its prolonged drug detection window of up to 90 days. Despite its advantages, for recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair samples has emerged as a formidable approach for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of almost 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample from 1.5-inch strands, approximately 200 in number (resembling a standard #2 pencil size), closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG assessments, additional analyses, or panels exceeding 10, a recommendation is to use 150mg of the sample. It's advised to utilize a jeweler's scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test is comprised of four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in additional data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal validity. Any presumptively positive samples from Screening need further affirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves the extraction of drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a highly complex methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing for Confirmation purposes. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments with shorter detection timelines.
  • Resilience to tampering: Circumventing a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: It offers a timeline of drug use, covering more than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unsuitable for detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
