Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Hampstead, North Carolina. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise at Accredited Drug Testing lies in hair analysis, with facilities spread across all cities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is needed. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has gained traction over recent years as the preferred drug screening method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often mandate a hair test over traditional urine tests. This approach caters to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial mandates, and probation checks. Its key advantage is a significantly extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, rendering it nearly unassailable to manipulation. Conversely, urine testing remains the most reliable option for recent drug use spanning the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and other substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. Collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (around the girth of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages involved in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process encompasses verifying that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry that the electronic chain of custody system has not provided.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening serves as an economical method for dismissing drug use in most samples, verification of a positive screen is necessary for it to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers as tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is far lower than in other approaches (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples previously marked as presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a period of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to deceive: It is notably challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical information: It presents a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle within the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hampstead, NC, the debate between hair follicle and urine drug testing considers multiple factors. Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy due to their longer detection window, which stretches up to 90 days. This extensive period allows for a detailed assessment of an individual's drug history, surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests, thus providing a more reliable analysis of substance use.

Due to its thorough detection capabilities, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine testing in many scenarios. Where urine tests may miss remnants of substances in the system after a short period, hair tests retain a record, making it a preferred choice for organizations aiming to maintain strict no-drug policies. This proactive approach aids organizations in maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

The capability of hair follicle testing in Hampstead, NC to uncover drug use over an extended duration grants employers a comprehensive insight into a person's substance history. This tests’ ability to detect usage up to nine days offers a much broader scope than other methods, assisting employers in making informed hiring or retention decisions based on validated substance use history.

Employers prioritizing safety and reliability in the workplace may find hair follicle tests' prolonged detection periods especially beneficial. This robust screening tool helps ensure that employees maintain a clean record over a longer timeframe, fostering a safer, more productive working environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hampstead, NC, the hair follicle drug test stands as a formidable barrier against adulteration attempts, greatly reducing the likelihood of tampering to achieve accurate and reliable results. This tamper-resistant attribute ensures that samples reflect true substance use patterns, offering a steadfast shield against dishonest practices in drug testing.

Leading the fight against sample adulteration, hair follicle tests provide a superior method for reliable drug screening. Their inherent resistance to external interference guarantees the authenticity of results, thus providing an essential tool for maintaining organisational integrity and promoting accurate reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
