Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Henrietta, North Carolina. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, we specialize in hair analysis and have facilities nationwide, including every city, equipped to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly replaced traditional methods. These tests are preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, as opposed to standard urine tests. Employers upholding zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and those on probation, utilize hair tests, which offer a detection window of roughly 90 days, combined with observed collection, making them difficult to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust solution for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a longitudinal record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands' structure as they grow. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it offers an approximate 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, is somewhat resistant to tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) positioned closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG testing, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. We specify that head hair exclusively denotes scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary process of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This phase confirms the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to negate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening necessitates validation to be legally credible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a far lower concentration relative to other testing methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed pre-confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a truncated detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent usage detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp's underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
