In Longview, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. For those needing hair or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair tests, with centers available in all major cities across the country, ready to conduct hair analysis. Most individuals require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. We can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized hair testing solutions.

Recently, the approach for conducting drug tests has increasingly included hair follicle examinations. This method is gaining acceptance among employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts who prefer it over urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and probationers frequently opt for hair follicle tests. Their main advantage is the extended detection timeline, typically up to 90 days; these tests are collected in a supervised setting, making them nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests provide superior accuracy for detecting usage within the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Biomarkers from alcohol and other substances become embedded in the fibers of the hair as it grows, providing a prolonged record of usage. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or screenings exceeding ten panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. The term head hair denotes scalp hair solely, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in laboratory processing for drug test evaluation are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample in a laboratory system. It involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a superficial scan for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude substance usage in most samples, a verified positive requires confirmation for admissibility in legal contexts. Any sample that indicates a presumptive positive in Screening necessitates further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive result, more hair is collected from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, the extraction of substances from hair occurs at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the challenge of executing hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo necessary pre-washing. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Reduced likelihood of manipulation: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug evaluation enhances the precision of outcomes.
  • Historical usage pattern: It reveals a trend of substance use over an extended timeframe, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days to manifest substances.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although colloquially referred to as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation actually examines the strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
