Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lowell, North Carolina. For hair or alcohol testing needs, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing centers available across cities nationwide to conduct tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair suffices. Hair tests are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing solutions.

Over recent years, drug testing methods are increasingly utilizing hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary oversight. Their key advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making tampering virtually impossible. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substances through biomarkers trapped in the strands as they grow. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol data spanning up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or over 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is preliminarily processed into a lab’s system, ensuring that it was correctly sealed and sent, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplemental data required beyond the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While being cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction procedure. In this step, drug concentration is derived from hair at a lower level relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests reveal substance use up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Cheating is difficult: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher due to the challenge in falsifying results.
  • Historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called “hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
