In Piney Green, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol testing, we provide reliable hair testing solutions in numerous Nationwide locations. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is often required, allowing analysis for various substances including ETG for alcohol, and offering tailored testing solutions.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has become prevalent in drug screenings. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, it's favored over traditional urine tests for zero-tolerance environments or probationary monitoring. The main advantage is its ability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days under observation, reducing the chance of tampering. Yet, for recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering an extended history of substance use over time. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for approximately up to three months. This method is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's recommended to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is divided into four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry necessary when an electronic chain of custody isn't available.

Screening involves a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug usage in most samples, positive results must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug analysis is particularly challenging.

To verify any positive screening findings, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples that show presumptive positive results are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug testing is challenging to trick, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a timeline of drug usage over months, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Variations in accuracy: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rate can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests excel over urine tests in Piney Green, NC due to their superior detection range and dependability. They can identify drug use over longer periods, offering more precise assessments. While urine tests are common, hair tests are remarkably resilient to falsification attempts, thus ensuring high integrity in test outcomes and supporting stringent compliance in substance monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

One of the chief advantages of hair follicle testing in Piney Green, NC, is its extended detection window. It provides insight into drug use history for up to 90 days. This long-term detection capability enables employers to comprehensively evaluate an individual's past substance habits, helping in making informed decisions about the candidate or employee's suitability and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Piney Green, NC, are notably tamper-resistant. This testing methodology significantly minimizes the likelihood of sample tampering compared to other methods. By providing authentic and reliable results, it Asserts confidence that the data collected represents the true substance use history of the individual, reducing doubt in the decision-making process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
