In Weldon, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. When a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, we offer specialized hair tests, available in testing centers across the country capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body are required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other analyses.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, the judicial system, and probation officers. The main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, coupled with supervised collection and resistance to tampering, making it highly reliable. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best for detecting very recent drug use, within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is processed into a lab’s system, confirming that it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples giving a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is freshly positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assessment the most challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical patterns: Provides an overview of drug usage trends over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot sense recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are evident in Weldon, NC. With superior detection accuracy, hair tests can identify drug use over an extended period, making them more reliable for comprehensive evaluations. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests offer less chance of tampering and provide a broader historical view of substance consumption.

Employers adopting zero-tolerance policies find hair follicle tests a valuable tool. With an ability to trace drug intake for up to 90 days, these tests outperform urine tests, which only cover a shorter detection span. The observed collection process further enhances hair testing's reliability, ensuring results reflect genuine substance use behavior, securing workplace integrity and safety.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing excels in Weldon, NC, due to its extended detection window. With a capability of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, it offers employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. This long detection period enables better assessments, ensuring that past drug use is thoroughly evaluated when considering job applicants or monitoring employees.

By spanning a much broader timeframe, hair tests offer insights beyond the limited detection capabilities of urine tests, which are often confined to recent drug intake. Employers gain a clearer understanding of a candidate's or employee's behavior over the last few months, promoting informed decision-making and enhancing workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Weldon, NC, hair follicle tests significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration, offering a reliable, tamper-resistant testing method. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated, hair tests are collected through an observed and secure process, ensuring no external interference with the sample.

This method provides peace of mind to employers and legal entities seeking integrity in drug testing results. By virtually eliminating the possibility of tampering, hair follicle testing guarantees that the results reflect true substance use, delivering consistent and trustworthy insights that reinforce organizational policies and legal standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
