Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Alsen, North Dakota. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing enables us to provide this service nationwide through testing centers. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probation services utilize these tests. The main advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, collected in a monitored environment, making them hard to tamper with. However, for drug use detection in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained prominence as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer an extended timeline of substance intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period extending up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil), close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or exams surpassing 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair encompasses all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This phase verifies that the sample is well-sealed and dispatched accurately and assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), alongside completing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it serves as a budget-friendly means to dismiss drug usage for the bulk of specimens, any positive screening requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Specimens with a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation step.

Should a specimen yield a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of any positive result during Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug examinations can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating is challenging: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It uncovers a substance usage pattern over a duration, not merely showcasing recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapacitated to spot recent intake: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically carry a higher cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Diverse results: Hair color and personal growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this assessment scrutinizes the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
