Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Taylor, North Dakota. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our centers span all U.S. cities to meet your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head top or body is sufficient for testing. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has surged in popularity. A preferred choice among many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, this method is favored over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies and courts overseeing probation cases often choose this option. The main advantage? It offers a 90-day detection period, is directly supervised, and is nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more precise for drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered adjacent to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period extending up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and easy to dispatch.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, which consists of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearby the scalp, amounts to 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is suggested to collect 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in a lab’s processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial processing within a laboratory system. This step includes confirming the sample’s proper seal and shipment, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary, swift check for substance use. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair framework and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to circumvent, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical consumption pattern: These tests can depict a timeline of substance use over an extended period, as opposed to highlighting recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A timeframe of approximately 5-7 days is required for substances to become discernible in hair.
  • Increased cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
