Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wimbledon, North Dakota. Specializing in hair tests, our centers are available nationwide for those requiring drug or alcohol testing via hair analysis. For optimal results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is ideal. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly selecting hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, probation checks, and offer a detection timeline of up to 90 days, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores extended information about alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of approximately up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory handling of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This consists of ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody approach.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal contexts. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which feature a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, thus improving result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically demand more expense than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal distinctions in hair growth may impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wimbledon, ND, hair follicle tests prove superior to traditional urine tests with their enhanced detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses can identify drug use over longer periods, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of substance use history. This makes hair testing a more reliable choice for employers and legal professionals looking to maintain safety and compliance.

Additionally, the accuracy of a hair follicle test surpasses conventional urine analyses. The extended detection window, coupled with a nearly tamper-proof process, ensures that the results are trustworthy and effective in maintaining enforcement of zero-tolerance policies and other drug-free directives in the workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Wimbledon, ND, can benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle tests. These tests reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, granting a more comprehensive look at an individual's substance history. This prolonged detection capability surpasses that of urine tests, providing a broader overview of potential patterns or issues related to drug use.

This extended window empowers employers and legal entities to make more informed decisions about hiring and ongoing personnel management. By understanding long-term substance use habits, businesses and courts can take appropriate actions to support safety and compliance with drug-free policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Wimbledon, ND, hair follicle tests offer a robust defense against sample adulteration, significantly reducing the potential for tampering. This reliability is vital for ensuring that the results are valid, providing peace of mind to employers and authorities requiring precise data for decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
