Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Arlington Heights, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with facilities across the Nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is used. Hair tests allow analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice in recent years. This type of test is increasingly sought by employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists instead of traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and probation systems. Their major advantage lies in their extended detection period for drug use, usually up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, they are conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become regarded as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, the hair reveals a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp delivers 100mg, the optimal amount for initial testing and validation. For EtG, supplemental testing, and/or panels above 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advocate for weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory stage of entering a sample into a lab's framework. It ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any other data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, confirmation is required for any positive screen to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that indicate a possible positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If Screening indicates a potential positive, additional hair is extracted and prepped for Extraction. Here, compounds are isolated from the hair at concentrations much more subtle than those in other tests (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug analysis is so complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • High resistance to deception: The challenge in manipulating a hair drug exam leads to more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can exhibit a drug usage trend over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lack of detection for recent use: Drugs only become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair pigment and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the focus is on the hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When evaluating drug screening methods in Arlington Heights, OH, hair follicle tests stand out compared to traditional urine tests. Their benefits include exceptional detection accuracy and reliability, making them superior. While urine tests can detect recent use, hair tests provide a longer detection window, highlighting past usage.

Alternative methods like urine testing often miss drug consumption that occurred weeks earlier, whereas hair testing covers up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive overview of substance use. This longer period accounts for its rising popularity among employers enforcing strict no-drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Arlington Heights, OH, hair follicle testing allows for an extended drug detection window, up to 90 days. This lengthy period gives employers insights into an individual's broader history of substance use, beyond recent events. Unlike other testing methods, hair analysis captures long-term patterns, useful for employer assessments.

This extended detection significantly influences hiring decisions and ensures workplace safety. Employers can confidently gauge whether potential hires or current employees align with company policies on drug use, fostering an ethical and secure work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Arlington Heights, OH, hair follicle testing is recognized for its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other drug testing methods, hair samples are less susceptible to adulteration or substitution, ensuring the integrity of results. This reduces the likelihood of false negatives or incorrect assessments, maintaining a trustworthy screening process.

This reliability makes hair tests a preferred choice for employers and legal professionals who demand unquestionable results. The rigorous collection process ensures authenticity, providing all parties peace of mind and the assurance of accuracy in drug testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
