Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Benton Ridge, Ohio. For individuals in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we operate testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored testing options.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in drug testing methodologies. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers imposing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The standout advantage is its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision and remarkably challenging to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests still offer the utmost accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month period for alcohol and drugs detection. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a standard pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be acquired. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial insertion of a sample into a lab’s systems. This phase involves verifying the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, the allocation of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), alongside completing additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an immediate check for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to discount drug usage for most samples, a positive indication requires further confirmation for court validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for preparation during Extraction. This phase sees the retrieval of drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than seen in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies corroborate any positive screening results. Presumptive positive specimens undergo requisite washing before confirmation. The comprehensive lab operation, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair identifier and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug examinations can recognize drug consumption for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug examinations generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements including hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
