In Bowersville, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and our nationwide centers, including Bowersville, facilitate these tests. Typically, hair samples from either the scalp or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, are ample for analysis. We can screen for drugs, ETG, and conduct customized testing.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the method of choice for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses due to their extended detection window. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and courtroom requirements, these tests identify drug use for up to 90 days through observed collections, making them highly reliable and almost tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests still offer the most precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately a 3-month period of alcohol and drug exposure. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial phase of entering a sample into a lab's system. This phase includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a primary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Even though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Any samples suggestively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests suggestively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing that hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suggestive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if required. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is extremely challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bowersville, OH, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine testing methods. One of its primary benefits is the extended detection period for substance use, providing a more comprehensive overview of an individual's history. Compared to urine tests, hair tests are less invasive and offer superior reliability, ensuring accurate and verifiable results.

Employers benefit from the longer detection window, which helps enforce zero-tolerance policies efficiently. Hair testing reduces the opportunity for manipulation or falsification, unlike urine testing. Ultimately, it presents a robust alternative.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing in Bowersville, OH offers an extended detection window covering approximately 90 days. This feature provides employers with an in-depth view of potential or current employees' substance use, extending beyond what urine tests offer. The comprehensive detection period ensures a more thorough assessment, enhancing decision-making in hiring processes.

The long window of detection makes hair tests ideal for long-term evaluations, complementing the overall drug screening strategy for businesses focused on maintaining a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test method in Bowersville, OH stands out for its resistance to tampering, providing secure and trustworthy results. Given the method's design, it significantly diminishes the potential for adulteration, ensuring integrity throughout the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
