Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Dexter City, Ohio. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have nationwide centers ready for hair testing. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body available for analysis. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become the preferred method for drug testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests instead of urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, probation services, and courts rely on these tests. A key advantage of hair tests is the extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, using a supervised collection process that's nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for drug detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strand records a comprehensive timeline by capturing biomarkers within its fibers. When gathered near the scalp, it offers an approximate three-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating the sample into the lab system initially. This phase includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAB ID (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for court validity. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair analysis is among the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug analysis:

  • Lengthy detection span: Hair drug tests can monitor drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulties in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, ensuring higher result precision.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption habits, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
