Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Canton, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialists are proficient in hair testing, with facilities across major cities nationwide ready to administer your test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

In recent trends, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. This approach is being adopted by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, favor hair follicle tests. The main advantage is their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, providing a substantial history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential phases in processing a drug test in a laboratory involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective means of excluding drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to evade: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
