Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Seneca, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and has test centers in various cities across the nation equipped to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, or body hair, can be used. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Employers who enforce strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals are adopting hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection timeframe for drug use, which can be up to 90 days, gathered through a supervised collection, and is almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair can encapsulate a long-term history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. When trimmed near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection window for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, it is relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a basic preliminary analysis for drug substances. While Screening is a cost-effective measure to discount substance use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require secondary verification.

With presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at concentrations lower compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing particularly intricate to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation when needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analysis can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine screening with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Minimal chance of deception: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Historical insight: Offers a comprehensive view of drug use over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although generally referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand and does not involve the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
