Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Four Bridges, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect substances like drugs and alcohol, or tailored testing options are available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and probationers. Their key advantage lies in a detection window of up to 90 days, alongside an observed collection method that minimizes tampering. For detecting recent use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant resource for identifying substance use. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month history of alcohol and drug consumption. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to manipulation, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" references scalp hair exclusively, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main procedural stages of laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring that it's properly sealed and dispatched, distributing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any required data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates validation for judicial acceptance. Any samples presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

If Screening presumptively identifies a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening’s complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection spans of urine tests.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair drug testing encounters minimal cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical insight: It outlines drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectability: Detecting drugs in hair requires roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Four Bridges, OH, hair testing stands out due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation and offer a broader view of substance use over time. While urine tests may be traditional, hair analysis offers a more comprehensive, cheat-resistant method for employers and courts.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests provide an extensive detection period in Four Bridges, OH, spanning up to 90 days. This generous window offers employers a thorough perspective on an individual's substance use history, which is crucial for making informed decisions about hiring or monitoring current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
