Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Freedom Station, Ohio. For those requiring drug or alcohol assessments, we specialize in hair testing with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Each test can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for screening in recent years, favored over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary programs prefer these tests. Hair tests offer extended detection times up to 90 days, are collected under direct supervision, and are challenging to manipulate. Yet, for recent usage within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term record for substances like alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp ensures a 100mg sample, the optimal weight for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We advocate verifying the sample's weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, a similar quantity of body hair might be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in a laboratory drug test result process encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched properly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes an initial brief assessment for drugs. Although Screening effectively rules out drug use in the bulk of samples at a lower cost, a positive result requires validation for legal presentation. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive from Screening, extra hair is separated from the main sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are derived from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging in execution.

Verification of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is assessed under the governance of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a limited detection span.
  • High resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly tricky, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronological data: It can depict a timeline of drug use over an interval, surpassing immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to manifest in hair strands.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing practices.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color or individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading as the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests outperform traditional urine tests in Freedom Station, OH due to their superior accuracy and reliability. Hair testing boasts a longer detection window, offering more comprehensive insights into an individual’s substance use compared to the limited window urine tests offer.

While both methods serve their purpose, hair testing provides unmatched detection capability. It’s less prone to manipulation and delivers a clearer picture of long-term drug use, reinforcing its effectiveness over urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Experience the benefit of an extended detection period with hair follicle testing in Freedom Station, OH. This method can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, allowing employers to better assess the substance history of applicants or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
