Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Granville, Ohio. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analyses, with facilities located in every city nationwide prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach in drug screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary cases. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, which can be up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making them nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within a recent 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering substance and alcohol consumption. The hair provides a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that is not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective method to rule out substance use in the majority of samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening mandates further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to tamper with: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can offer an account of drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally more costly than alternative methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though referred to as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
