Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Holiday Valley, Ohio. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers in every city across the country ready to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are preferring hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are chosen by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period—up to 90 days—through an observed procedure that's nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate a detection timeline of roughly three months for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, fairly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section made up of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) located closest to the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments that exceed 10 panels, obtaining 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample weight on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Note that when referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair, while body hair signifies all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical stages in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage of entering a sample into the lab system. Tasks include confirming that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary check for substance presence. This cost-efficient process helps eliminate negative samples; however, any positive results require further confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptively positive results in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is selected from the original batch for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, presenting unique challenges in hair drug testing.

Positive Screening samples require Confirmation, conducted with methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Cheating difficulty: Hair drug testing is hard to deceive, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: It outlines a drug usage pattern over time instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to trace recent usage: A period of 5-7 days is required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense factor: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Holiday Valley, OH, hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage over traditional urine testing. While both methods can detect substance use, hair follicle testing provides superior detection accuracy, effectively monitoring drug use history over extended periods and ensuring reliability in maintaining safe work environments.

The comparison shows that hair testing stands out by ignoring short detection limits, unlike urine tests affected by immediate use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection windows make hair follicle testing a standout option in Holiday Valley, OH. Unlike other methods, this approach captures drug use history up to 90 days past, offering employers an in-depth view of a person's substance habits.

Surely advantageous, this longer timeline ensures a comprehensive assessment, allowing employers to make informed decisions when reviewing an individual’s substance history during screening.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

At Holiday Valley, OH, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests ensures the integrity of results. This testing method significantly decreases the risk of sample adulteration, providing results that are not only reliable but also unquestionable for employers needing accuracy.

Such precision confirms the test's validity, making it a trusted choice for complex evaluations where reducing manipulation is vital.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
