Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hunting Valley, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this domain, with testing facilities available in every city across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is required, though body hair can also be used. Our hair analyses can detect substances, including alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug evaluations have become a popular method for substance testing. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine analysis. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation departments find value in hair follicle tests due to their longer drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, observer-supervised sample collection method, and reduced likelihood of tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within a short 5-day window, urine tests remain the top choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, added tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central steps in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, more hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than via other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging to perform.

Verification of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standard of ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can offer a drug usage trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in Hunting Valley, OH? Hair tests offer superior detection ability by identifying drugs consumed over an extended period compared to the limited range of urine tests. The reliability of hair testing is unmatched, making it a preferred choice for organizations keen on maintaining a drug-free environment.

Hair tests dominate in areas where traditional urine analyses fall short. Their ability to detect substances used up to 90 days prior offers a compelling advantage. When compared to urine testing, hair follicle methods provide a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug use history, ensuring better decision-making for employers.

Extended Detection Window

In Hunting Valley, OH, hair follicle testing provides a significant edge due to its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. For employers, this means a thorough review of a candidate's or employee’s substance use history, offering a clearer picture than conventional testing methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
