In Lakeline, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, available at our centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required for testing. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair test options.

Hair follicle drug tests are increasingly common in recent years for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probation officers increasingly rely on hair tests due to their longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—and difficult-to-manipulate processes. Although, urine tests still lead for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug use. The hair's fibers in a growing strand trap biomarkers, thus chronicling a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage. When taken near the scalp, hair can show a detection window of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp totals 100mg of hair, the prime sample needed for screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. “Head hair” refers specifically to scalp hair. “Body hair” covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample’s initial integration into a lab’s system, including confirming the sample’s seal and proper shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial brief evaluation for illegal drugs. While screening is an efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally acceptable. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is potentially positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as necessary. The entire laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, receives review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: It's challenging to falsify a hair test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides patterns of substance use over time rather than merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and individual growth can influence the concentration of metabolites in hair.

Note: Often labeled as “hair follicle tests,” the evaluation focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lakeline, OH, hair follicle testing stands superior to urine tests, offering numerous benefits. Hair tests showcase superior detection accuracy as they keep a comprehensive record of an individual's drug use history, unlike urine tests which are limited to a short timeframe.

  • Records a prolonged history of drug use
  • High reliability

Employers benefit from opting for hair testing over traditional methods, gaining insights into potential employee behavior far beyond what urine tests can offer. With its enhanced reliability, hair testing in Lakeline assures employers about the past drug habits of candidates.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Lakeline, OH provide an extended detection window compared to other drug tests. Unlike traditional methods, hair follicle testing can detect drug use over a substantial period, up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeline offers a detailed look into an individual's substance usage history.

  • Up to 90-day detection
  • Detailed drug use history

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
