Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lewis Center, Ohio. We specialize in hair-based drug and alcohol tests and have facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body for analysis. Hair tests can detect substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, with other customizable options available.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug screening purposes. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation commonly use them. The main advantage of hair tests is their longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. This method captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can afford a detection span of up to around 3 months for substances. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section encompassing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equating to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both testing and verification. For EtG assessment, supplementary testing, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures involved in processing a drug test result encompass four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This process includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary assessment for substance misuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive test requires confirmation to be allowable in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screen is executed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can reveal substance use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine testing which offers a shorter detection window.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Manipulating hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing solutions.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

There's a growing preference for hair follicle testing over urine tests in Lewis Center, OH, due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests offer a broader detection window and higher reliability, identifying drug use more effectively. As more industries adopt zero-tolerance policies, the shift towards hair testing emphasizes the importance of valid, reliable results, minimizing the chances of evasion through specimen substitution.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most significant benefits of hair follicle testing in Lewis Center, OH is the extended detection window it offers. With the capability to trace substance use over the past 90 days, this testing method gives employers a thorough view of an individual's substance history. Unlike other methods, hair tests enable comprehensive monitoring, ensuring a complete analysis of an employee's or applicant’s past drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test is a tamper-resistant method that greatly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration in Lewis Center, OH. The collection process is directly observed, reducing the possibility of cheating, unlike urine testing techniques. This reliability ensures that the test results are unquestionably accurate, providing crucial evidence for employers dedicated to maintaining a drug-free work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
