Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in New Miami, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in every city Nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body are necessary. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized testing options.

Over recent years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is the extended detection timeframe for drug use, which can span up to 90 days, gathering samples through an observed collection process, making it almost foolproof. However, for identifying drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) close to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the standard sample size for analysis. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is beneficial to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and covers any necessary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be legally valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods such as urine or oral fluid. This makes hair drug screening one of the more technically challenging methods.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a restricted detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug testing is challenging to falsify, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a utilization pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
