In New Middletown, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our specialization includes hair drug and alcohol tests, with centers across all cities Nationwide available to conduct such testing. A hair sample ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, taken from the crown of the head or body, is generally required. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to suit other testing needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse are now favoring hair testing over the traditional urine tests. Hair tests are particularly used by employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage includes an extended detection period of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection that reduces the chance of tampering. However, tests within five days are more accurately performed using urine.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair supplies a prolonged history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection range for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg, the optimum amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The critical phases in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab's system. This step includes checking that the specimen was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples, yet a positive result must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Any specimens presumed positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of executing hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: A hair test is challenging to defeat, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical usage: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It usually requires 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
