Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Old Fort, Ohio. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, we specialize in this procedure, boasting testing centers in every city nationwide to carry out such tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. The hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specialized assessments.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly incorporated the hair follicle method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. It provides the significant advantage of a longer drug detection timeline of up to 90 days, using a supervised collection method that is almost impossible to manipulate. However, for tracing drug use within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of approximately 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a preliminary brisk assessment for illicit substances. While Screening presents a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome in Screening must be substantiated for court acceptability. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair in notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive Screening outcome undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resilience to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insights: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair shaft, not the root beneath the scalp.

In Old Fort, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests with its superior detection accuracy. Hair tests provide a more reliable indicator of drug use, with results difficult to falsify. Compared to traditional methods, hair testing offers distinct advantages, including a longer detection period and robust reliability, ensuring stringent adherence to substance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
