Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Reily, Ohio. If you require hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be needed. Hair tests are capable of screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized hair testing selections.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug testing in lieu of the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with stringent drug use policies, courts, and for those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection range for drug usage, around 90 days, collected via direct observation, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended tracing of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easily collected, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of around 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, extras, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory’s system. This process confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening is a preliminary swift examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in the majority of specimens, any positive detection must be substantiated to be legally recognized. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is undertaken with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have briefer detection durations.
  • Hard to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage pattern: It illustrates a timeline of drug use, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
