Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Seven Mile, Ohio. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol screening, we have myriad locations nationwide ready to conduct these tests. For most cases, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, and it can be taken from the head or body. Our analyses can test for various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in testing methods. They're favored by employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts over the conventional urine tests. Especially suited for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, these tests extend their utility to courts and probation conditions. Key advantages include an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days and a stringent collection protocol, making tampering almost impossible. Despite this, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting substance use within an immediate 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing hair has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can chronicle extended histories of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A portion of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, the recommendation is 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equal volume of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifies only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses hair types other than head hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test in a lab follows four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory's system. This step checks proper sealing and transportation of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although it provides a cost-saving way to identify drug usage for most samples, a positive screen calls for further confirmation to be court-admissible. Screening's presumptively positive results necessitate a secondary confirmation test.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at considerably lower concentrations compared to other means (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Any positive results from the screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positive specimens are washed if required before confirmation. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Due to the difficulty of cheating, hair tests offer more reliable results.
  • Chronicles usage history: Hair tests reveal trends in drug use over an extended timeframe, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur a greater expense than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests scrutinize the hair strand rather than the hair follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
