Accredited Drug Testing offers fully comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Shawnee Hills, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analyses, with testing centers available in cities across the country for performing such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing varieties.

Recently, the incorporation of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing has risen significantly. An increasing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers who enforce strict drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. One major advantage of using a hair follicle drug test lies in its extended detection range, covering up to 90 days, being collected under supervision, and being virtually uncheatable. Nonetheless, for drug detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Using hair testing is increasingly regarded as a highly effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs as it integrates biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

By taking a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, one can obtain 100mg of hair, which is the adequate sample for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inadequate, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases within the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid scan for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For a sample with a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial collection and processed for Extraction. At this point, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive Screening outcome is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more restricted detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to the difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test, the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a pattern of drug use over time rather than merely indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur more expense compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the scalp-based hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
