Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Van Buren, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessments, with facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for sampling. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair analysis choices.

In recent times, drug assessments more often involve hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug evaluations over the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is relied upon by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and individuals on parole. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, collected through an observed method making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair samples has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the evolving hair fiber. When taken near the scalp, hair can extend up to a 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG add-ons or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test result involves four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This entails confirming the sample's seal and shipment are intact, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry not already provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples registering a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are removed from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

To confirm any positive screen, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are applied. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Insightful usage patterns: It provides long-term usage patterns, conveying more than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs generally become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug testing typically incurs more expense than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
