Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vaughnsville, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers spread across all cities nationwide that are equipped to perform these tests. Typically, hair length on the crown of your head or body should be 1.5 to 2 inches. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requests.

In recent times, conducting drug tests increasingly involves hair follicle drug tests. A plethora of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the conventional urine checks. Hair follicle drug tests are implemented by employers with zero-tolerance policies on substance use, in judicial systems, and probationary requirements. One of their key advantages is that hair tests detect drug use up to 90 days back, collected under observation, making them very hard to falsify. Yet, for detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly seen as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send for analysis.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By 'head hair,' we mean only scalp hair. 'Body hair' describes all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug use. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive result from screening requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, the drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely difficult, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Vaughnsville, OH, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests have a superior detection period, identifying drug use back to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect recent use. This extended window provides a more reliable depiction of an individual's substance history, offering employers in Vaughnsville a robust, reliable testing solution.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Vaughnsville, OH, benefit from the extensive detection window offered by hair follicle testing. Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days prior, these tests provide a thorough overview of an individual’s substance use. This extended detection capability is crucial for employers seeking a long-term view of potential employees' drug use backgrounds.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Vaughnsville, OH, the efficacy of hair follicle tests stems from their tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other drug test methods, hair tests significantly reduce the risk of sample tampering. This is because the collection process is observed, and the hair sample's inherent properties make adulteration exceptionally challenging, ensuring consistent and trustworthy results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
