Accredited Drug Testing offers professional hair follicle drug screening in Vermilion, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair analysis and operate testing facilities in cities across the nation equipped for hair assessments. Typically, hair length should be 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation services. The main advantage is their extended detection range, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making them hard to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the head, hair can provide a detection window for around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests that surpass 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory processing of a drug test outcome includes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial processing of the sample into the laboratory's system. This procedure ensures that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not submitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drug abuse detection. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results from Screening must be verified for courtroom acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening require additional verification.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening, further hair is extracted from the preliminary sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory cycle, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • High difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result integrity.
  • Historical usage insights: It depicts a drug use pattern over a timeline rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair development can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
