Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in West Middletown, Ohio. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all major cities Nationwide capable of conducting these assessments. Typically, sample collection requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair can also be utilized. Hair tests are designed to detect substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Many organizations—employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists—favor hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probationary authorities often choose hair testing. It boasts a lengthy detection window, often up to 90 days, and is collected under direct supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. However, if the goal is to check for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A strand sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is ideal. It is advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair indicates only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process of generating a drug test outcome in a lab encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning addresses the sample's entry into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing data input not supplied by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening entails an initial, rapid analysis for drug presence. Though cost-effective, a positive screening needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily identified as positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results go through washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection window.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than indicating just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in West Middletown, OH Hair follicle tests provide a broader detection window than urine tests, tracing substance use over a more extended period. These tests are more reliable due to their observability, reducing chances of sample tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
