Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Tulsa, Oklahoma. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, our specialty is hair testing, and we have facilities in all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown of your head, though body hair may be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent for drug screenings. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection period for substances, up to 90 days, with direct oversight during collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests prove most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resists tampering, and is easy to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For screenings involving EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with inputting the sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and submitting any required data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug usage. Although Screening is cost-efficient and effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is rigorously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Variances in hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the testing process actually analyzes hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
