Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Red Bird, Oklahoma. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this method and operate testing centers throughout all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body are required. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized options.

Recently, utilizing hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug testing. Various employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary services often choose hair follicle tests for their extensive detection periods—up to 90 days—paired with an observed collection process, which minimizes the possibility of tampering. Although, for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing an extended history of alcohol and drugs. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a potential 3-month timeframe for detecting these substances. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial testing and subsequent verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses above 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Note that head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's integration into a laboratory’s system. It includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and transit, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug presence. Although a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that show presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumptive positive samples are subjected to washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation with adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in altering hair test outcomes ensures greater accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: Displays drug use patterns over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often used, actually refers to analyzing the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Red Bird, OK, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are substantial. Hair tests provide superior accuracy with a wider detection window, revealing substance use long after it would be undetectable in urine. This makes hair testing more reliable and comprehensive.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
