Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing services in Rocky, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing with centers available nationwide to conduct the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for unique testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly choose hair tests over urine tests. Employers with no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation cases favor these tests due to extended detection periods, which could be about 90 days, observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug use. It offers a prolonged record by securing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage for up to about 3 months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and shipping is hassle-free.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, extended panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

Drug test processing in a laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to integrating a sample into a lab’s system initially. This step entails ensuring the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it offers an economical way to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs subsequent confirmation for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive screen necessitates further affirmation through confirmation.

Should Screening yield a presumptively positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted at a concentration far lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Verification of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as needed. The laboratory process is meticulously reviewed from Accessioning through Confirmation, adhering to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike the relatively brief detection period offered by urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to alter, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical patterning: These tests can trace drug use patterns over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Differing factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can alter drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
