Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Southeast Pontotoc, Oklahoma. If a drug or alcohol hair analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair analysis solutions.

The shift towards hair follicle drug assessments has increased in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair analyses over conventional urine tests. These tests support organizations with strict anti-drug policies, as well as probationary individuals. The primary advantage is an extended detection period, generally reaching up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process and hard to circumvent. However, urine testing remains the most precise method for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair accumulates a history of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window extending up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is advisable for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary processing into the laboratory’s system. This process involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not included within an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, however, a positive screen must be corroborated to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples flagging as presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample turn out presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is considered challenging to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is undertaken through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes rigorous review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection period.
  • Increased difficulty in tampering: It is highly challenging to manipulate the outcome of a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Yield historical data: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, rather than merely indicating recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur more cost compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Southeast Pontotoc, OK hinges mainly on its superior accuracy in identifying drug use. When compared to urine tests, hair follicle analyses provide a clearer picture, thanks to the extended detection window and reliability. Employers and judicial bodies favor hair tests due to their resistance to tampering and comprehensive result delivery.

The method surpasses traditional urine testing by encompassing a broader spectrum of drug use history in test subjects, ensuring adherence to zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window is a key advantage of hair follicle testing in Southeast Pontotoc, OK. Unlike other methods, hair tests monitor substance use over a much broader timeframe, typically up to 90 days. This prolonged period allows employers to gain an exhaustive understanding of an applicant or employee's history, supporting informed hiring and retention decisions.

Employers benefit from this expansive detection window as it lays bare the true frequency of substance use, aligning with comprehensive workplace safety protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
