In Adamstown, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring a drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in hair analysis and boast testing sites nationwide ready to conduct hair examinations. Most clients need 1.5 to 2-inch hair from their head or body for our tests, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug evaluations has noticeably shifted toward hair follicle analysis. It's increasingly selected by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict drug-free requirements, legal courts, and probationers rely on it. Its advantage lies in a lengthy detection capability, extending up to 90 days, ensuring an almost foolproof, directly observed collection process. Yet, for identifying drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an efficient method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair holds a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drug usage. The collection of hair is straightforward, reasonably hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) from the scalp is needed to obtain 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or examinations beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab includes the four key steps of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the primary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system, which covers confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra information input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples displaying a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair in concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening execution.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed prior to confirmation. The procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, extending beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting current use: Drugs are discernible in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strands, not the follicles under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For those in Adamstown, PA, hair testing provides superior advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests boast a much longer detection window and are less susceptible to external influences. This extends an employer's ability to review an individual's substance use comprehensively and accurately. The hair test method's robustness provides fewer opportunities for manipulation, delivering higher quality assurance.

Unlike urine tests, which typically require more frequent testing and face potential tampering, hair follicle tests offer extended validity. While urine tests remain the standard for short-term analysis, hair tests offer the ideal solution for long-term substance review, ensuring more comprehensive screening in a single step.

Extended Detection Window

In Adamstown, PA, one major benefit of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain detailed insights into an individual's historical drug use patterns. By analyzing hair samples, organizations can assess an applicant or employee's substance use over an extended timeframe, granting a more comprehensive view than short-term methods.

This testing method is designed to track long-standing drug consumption, aligning closely with the objectives of those needing regular and reliable screening. Recognizing consistent patterns over three months supports strategic decision-making in both hiring and compliance maintenance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Adamstown, PA, hair follicle drug tests offer an inherently tamper-resistant methodology. The collection process is straightforward and highly observable, eliminating opportunities for sample adulteration that could potentially undermine test results. Employers and testers alike find value in its reliability for genuine and undisputed results.

Ensuring integrity during sample collection, hair testing combats methods of cheating commonly associated with other drug tests. This level of security encourages trust in the accuracy and authenticity of the results provided, serving as a critical component in reliable testing practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
