In Alsace Manor, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair examinations, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct hair sampling. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug examination has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair-based tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The major advantage is the extended detection span, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days, obtained through an observed process, making deceit nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within a short 5-day window, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair can document a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by locking in biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is taken near the scalp, it offers a detection window for drugs and alcohol lasting up to roughly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. By "head hair," we mean exclusively scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to any other hair types (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of handling a drug test result in a laboratory is divided into four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary scan for identifying drugs of abuse. While it efficiently eliminates drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive at the Screening stage need further confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a tentative positive, more hair is drawn from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making it a challenging method to execute.

Positive results in the screening phase are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as tentatively positive are cleansed before undergoing confirmation, as necessary. Each stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Because it's challenging to deceive a hair drug test, results tend to be more reliable.
  • Tracks past use: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over extended periods, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Potential result variations: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
