Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Armbrust, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty in hair testing ensures access to centers across cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body generally suffices. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent trends, hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity. Many employers, legal courts, and addiction specialists now favor hair drug tests over urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies and judicial systems often opt for hair testing. This method's advantage is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, ensuring nearly foolproof results. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold precision.

What it is, How it works

As a formidable mechanism for unveiling substance and alcohol usage, hair testing has gained recognition. Hair chronicles a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. Located near the scalp, hair can reveal roughly a 90-day span of drug and alcohol detection. Collecting hair is straightforward, tamper-resistant, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands closest to the scalp (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional options, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. When referencing head hair, it is exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four pivotal steps are inherent in the lab processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary handling of a sample into a lab’s infrastructure. The process includes affirming that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening denotes the preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Though Screening offers an economical solution to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for legitimacy in legal contexts. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening require additional validation.

Upon yielding a presumptive positive during Screening, deeper analysis extracts more hair from the initial sample in the Extraction phase. Herein, drugs are extracted from hair in far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most intricate protocol to execute.

The Confirmation step of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive specimens undergo cleansing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The full laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can trace drug intake for up to 3 months, in contrast to urine tests with more abbreviated detection spans.
  • Resilience against tampering: Cheating a hair drug test proves challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical records: These tests can map drug utilization patterns over time, capturing more than mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs take about 5 to 7 days post-ingestion to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs relative to alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although colloquially known as "hair follicle tests", such tests analyze the hair strand and do not involve the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
