Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ashland, Pennsylvania. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair assessments, available across various nationwide locations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for such tests to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Many organizations, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests are favored by entities with strict drug policies since they offer extended detection capabilities of up to 90 days and are nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for around three months. Hair is straightforward to obtain, not easily tampered with, and convenient to mail.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weight is recommended. If scalp hair can't be acquired, a corresponding quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages of processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. While Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that screen positive require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug analysis one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to compromise: It is quite challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can trace a drug use pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become visible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
