In Avon, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across all cities in the nation capable of administering a hair test. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for analysis. Our hair screenings can inspect for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing possibilities.

The approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests in recent times. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair drug screening over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are utilized by companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage is its extended detection timeline for drug consumption, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, which is difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for determining intake within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying use of substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a record of alcohol and drugs over time by embedding biomarkers within the fiber structure of the growing strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeline of almost 3 months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is preferable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test laboratory processing is structured into four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase of a sample within a lab's system. This process ensures the sample has been sealed and sent accurately, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an expedited assessment for substance abuse. Screening provides a cost-effective method of eliminating drug usage in most samples; however, positive results during this stage must be confirmed for legal validation. Samples with presumed positive screens require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more strands are extracted from the initial sampling and processed for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower densities than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation via techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualifications and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeline: Hair tests can spot drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Toughness against manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Historial pattern offer: It reveals a chronic pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect use immediately after: Drugs typically show up in the hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense factor: Hair drug testing comes at a higher cost compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation pertains to the hair strands and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
