Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Bellevue, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in the field of hair analysis, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests in substance screening has risen. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer it over traditional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary monitoring rely on it. A key advantage is its extended detection time of up to 90 days, ensuring integrity through supervised collections. For recent drug use detection of up to 5 days, urine tests are typically more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process ensures the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening do require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: It offers a pattern of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing formats.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
