In Ben Avon, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and offer services in cities across the nation. To conduct these tests, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient in most instances. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for screening. They are preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies and monitor those on probation due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days. Collecting samples under observation makes the test nearly impossible to manipulate. For recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol presence. Hair captures a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equals 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When addressing head hair, the reference is solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This process comprises verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive sample is cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers past data: It can illustrate a drug use trend over time, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentration results.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
