Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bethayres, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. You should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp, though body hair works in most instances. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often choose hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those enforcing strict anti-drug policies including courts and probation officers. Their primary advantage is a longer detection period for substances, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, and extremely difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of these substances as biomarkers are embedded within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair may reveal a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect hair samples, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG assays, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the weight of the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages included in laboratory handling of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory’s framework. This phase involves confirming that the specimen is properly sealed and shipped, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary information entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to negate drug usage for most specimens, a positive screening result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Specimens that return a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the existing specimen for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis notably challenging.

Confirmation of a positive result from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a cleaning process before confirmation if needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification in addition to the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over the span of 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Complexity in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical pattern provision: This method can display a long-term pattern of drug use, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair color and differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, excluding the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
