Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Big Beaver, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with centers available across all cities nationwide for hair testing. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head is needed, though body hair may suffice. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly been adopted for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and those on probation due to their extended drug detection span of up to 90 days, being collected under supervised conditions, and their resilience against cheating. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands out as a robust means for detecting substance consumption, including alcohol, by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. A sample taken near the scalp can yield a detection span of nearly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and ships effortlessly.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, amounting to roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for primary screening and verification. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or those above 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in processing a drug test at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of integrating the sample into the lab's framework. It includes verifying the sample’s seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any further data entries not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Screening helps economically rule out drug use for most samples; however, a positive outcome requires confirmation for judicial acceptance. Samples showing positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a specimen be positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid; thus, making hair testing the most challenging method to implement.

Confirmation of any positive results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use up to 3 months prior, unlike urine tests that have a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly improbable, thus ensuring accuracy in results.
  • Chronological data: It supplies a timeline of drug habits over a term, rather than just latest usage.

Limitations:

  • Does not uncover recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing can be pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair pigmentation and individual growth rates.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
