Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Bishop, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair exams with facilities available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body can be tested. Our hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customized testing solutions.

Lately, the use of hair follicle drug testing has grown, becoming a preferred method over traditional urine examination. It's now a requirement for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. The test is favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. Its key advantage is detecting substance use within a longer timeframe, up to 90 days, with an observed collection that’s hard to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands, offering a long-term record of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use within an approximate 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil) from the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is optimal for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair denote scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis for a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any other data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Variations such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Bishop, PA, outshines traditional urine tests in multiple ways. It provides extended detection windows, capturing drug history over several months, unlike the short span of urine tests. This ensures a comprehensive insight into an individual's drug use, offering better informed decisions. Moreover, hair tests are less invasive and eliminate the discomfort often associated with providing urine samples in controlled settings.

The reliability and integrity of hair tests outstrip those of urine alternatives. Thanks to their robust nature, hair tests provide results less likely to be affected by short-term abstention from drug use, unlike urine tests vulnerable to tampering. In Bishop, PA, choosing hair follicle testing offers unmatched benefits, supporting strict enforcement of workplace and legal standards.

Extended Detection Window

In Bishop, PA, hair follicle testing is praised for its ability to detect drug use over prolonged periods, sometimes up to three months. This lengthy detection window surpasses other tests, offering employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history. By observing patterns over an extended timeframe, employers can make better-informed decisions about hiring and maintaining a drug-free workplace.

With its capacity to track past drug consumption, hair follicle testing gives a clearer picture of an individual's compliance with substance use policies. This broader window provides valuable insights, aiding employers in developing comprehensive substance management plans. In Bishop, PA, this strategic advantage fortifies workplace safety and policy adherence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Bishop, PA, benefits from hair follicle testing's robust resistance to tampering. Unlike traditional drug testing methods, hair tests greatly minimize opportunities to alter or manipulate results. This ensures that the outcomes are reliable, offering credible data on substance use. The integrity of the test is maintained through the stringent observed collection process, safeguarding against contamination or substitution.

The secure nature of hair follicle testing reassures both employers and employees in Bishop. By reducing the risk of adulteration, the testing method delivers trustworthy and decisive results. This heightened security level makes hair tests indispensable in environments prioritizing integrity and accuracy in drug use evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
