In Blandon, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drug or alcohol checks, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing locations available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, ETG, and offer customizable options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests are becoming a go-to choice for many employers, courts, and substance use experts over the conventional urine test. Employers with no-tolerance drug systems, judiciary services, and parolees often opt for hair drug testing. The key advantage is the significantly longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, making it almost impossible to falsify results. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biological markers within the fibers of hair that is actively growing. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer coverage for detecting drug and alcohol use for about up to three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. In the context of head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample has been appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a screen that tests positive must be confirmed for it to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that test tentatively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test tentatively positive are cleansed before confirmation, as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenges in deception: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug use over an extended timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Blandon, PA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can show recent usage, hair tests reveal a broader pattern, offering definitive insights into an individual's substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
