Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bowmanstown, Pennsylvania. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, we specialize in such services, with centers located nationwide. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair testing detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other customizable options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor it over standard urine tests. It's ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probation requirements. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days. The test is collected under observation and is difficult to cheat. Yet, for drugs used within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a valuable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system, which includes checking if the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If the sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, rendering more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Fluctuations in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
