Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Burlington, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we excel in hair testing with centers across all U.S. cities to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair can be used. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific choices.

The trend in drug testing methods increasingly includes hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors prefer hair testing over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal requirements, or probation individuals. The main advantage is a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, gathered through observed collection and hard to falsify. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days, urine testing still remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. Hair encapsulates a lengthy history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. A sample collected near the scalp potentially offers up to a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample weight on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term “head hair” specifically pertains to hair on the scalp, while “body hair” covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in lab processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executes any supplementary data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary fast check for substances of abuse. Although a cost-effective tactic to exclude drug use in many samples, any positive screen mandates confirmation to be court admissible, thus presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a follow-up validation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair from the primary sample is utilized for Extraction. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g. urine or saliva), accounting for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over an interval, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Results can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
